Vision

As an organization our vision could not be more important. We exist to see every person making disciples. Our vision comes directly from Jesus. In fact, it’s more accurate to say its his vision. Jesus came to love people. He came to restore people. Jesus put it this way,”

“I came down from heaven not to follow my own whim but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me. This, in a nutshell, is that will: that everything handed over to me by the Father be completed—not a single detail missed—and at the wrap-up of time I have everything and everyone put together, upright and whole. This is what my Father wants: that anyone who sees the Son and trusts who he is and what he does and then aligns with him will enter real life, eternal life. My part is to put them on their feet alive and whole at the completion of time.” (John 6:38-40, the Message).

As a church we want to align our priorities with Jesus’ priorities. At Brentview we use six images to describe what “together, upright and whole” looks like. We call these images discipleship traits. We believe a follower of Jesus is 1) alive, 2) grounded, 3) authentic, 4) enabled, 5) together, and 6) engaged.

Mission

A few years ago the Elders of Brentview encouraged our church to more intentionally consider the needs of the community around us. Our Holy Spirit-led mission is to transform and present Brentview as an essential part of the community of Calgary. We accomplish this by:
• living out discipleship practices.
• developing a Christ-like welcoming spirit.
• calling people to take the next steps in their faith journey.

Brentview has two focus areas: 1) equipping disciples, and 2) transforming our community.

Values

GOSPEL CENTERED | Jesus is our Saviour. We maintain the centrality of the mission and message of our King, and we want that to shape everything we are and do.

TRANSFORMATION | Life with Jesus is a life connected to the source of transformation. We are a community of people who desire to be transformed, and to be agents of transformation in our world.

EMPOWERED LEADERS | We believe every member of our community is influencing someone, somewhere. This is how we define leadership. We want to empower leaders who will be Gospel Centered and Transformational in the way they influence others.

GENEROSITY | As a community we serve a generous Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We desire to express his generosity to us as we are generous with each other, with our city and our world.

Core Beliefs

When it comes to our belief system, there are many things we remain open handed about. For example, there are some people in our church who believe God created the world is six days, and there are others who believe it took a lot longer. We have made a decision to agree to disagree on some things. We won’t let those issues divide us. There are other things we believe to be more essential to the Christian faith. These are our core beliefs.

OUR CORE BELIEF ABOUT GOD | We believe in one God revealed in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the second member of the Trinity who became human to reconcile both the world and humanity to its Creator. The Holy Spirit continues this work of reconciliation, as people place their trust in Jesus, and are made alive in the Holy Spirit’s power. I Peter 1:2; John 1:14; John 14:9; II Corinthians 5:21; Romans 4:23-25; Philippians 2:5-11; John 16:7-11; I Timothy 2:5

OUR CORE BELIEF ABOUT SALVATION | There are times when each of us falls short; we miss the mark. Our mistakes lead to brokenness. There are a lot of things people do to try and fix themselves, but we always come up short. Jesus died on the cross to do something about our brokenness, he paid the penalty for our mistakes so we wouldn’t have to. Jesus’ death and resurrection is the sole basis for the possibility of forgiveness of sin and salvation. We are made alive because of Jesus. Hebrews 1:1-3, I John 4:9-10, John 3:16, Acts 16:31; Hebrews 4:15; I Corinthians 15:3-4, John 14:23; Romans 5:12-21; 8-22

OUR CORE BELIEF ABOUT THE BIBLE | We believe that the Bible was written by people through the prompting and guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is in these scriptures that we clearly see God’s Story throughout history. We trust that the Bible is without error and we ground our lives in what the Bible teaches about God, humanity and the world. II Timothy 3:16; John 17:17; John 20:31; Matthew 4:4; II Peter 1:21;  I John 5:9-12; James 1:18; I Thessalonians 1:5-6, I Corinthians 12:13; I Corinthians 2:10-13; Luke 24:45-48

OUR COFE BELIEF ABOUT PEOPLE | We believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and that we are created to be in relationship with God and others. Each person has a unique authentic self that God purposely designed. Each person has also been created with unique talents and gifts that are enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 1:26; Psalm 139:13-17; Romans 8:16; Romans 12:5-8; I Peter 4:10; Acts 4:31; Romans 8:14; Romans 12:4-5

OUR CORE BELIEF ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN LIFE | We believe that God loves everyone. Regardless of your age, where you grew up, or what you’ve done; God wants to be in relationship with you. This is the message of Jesus; a Christian is someone who follows and makes Jesus their leader. A Christian embraces the message of God, and engages in the mission of God. John 1:12, Romans 8:34; Matthew 5:13-16; Luke 9:23; I John 3:16-17; James 2:1-4

OUR CORE BELIEF ABOUT THE CHURCH | We believe that God engages and reconciles the world through the church. The church is not a building, it is a group of disciples of Jesus, who are committed to meeting together and to serve one another. Ephesians 1:22-23; Romans 12:4-5; Matthew 18:17; Acts 6:3-6; 15:22-23

OUR CORE BELIEF ABOUT DISCIPLESHIP | A disciple is someone who is learning from someone else. In the Bible, a follower of Jesus is called a disciple. In our pursuit of learning from Jesus, there are six areas we focus on at Brentview. As we follow Jesus we want to become more: Alive, Grounded, Authentic, Enabled, Together, and Engaged.
